But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 7  (First Page Same as Part 1)

Luke 21:12 – But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.

This Scripture began to be fulfilled in the lives of the first New Testament Church members who heard it directly from the lips of Jesus as he spoke it to them, and continued to be fulfilled right up the time of the fall of Jerusalem, and in the days of the early churches into the third century.  But the last phrase in the following verse has yet to be fulfilled.

Hebrews 10:25 – Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The things in Luke 21:9 were, and still are, occurring!

Luke 21:9 – But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

There were many wars and commotions around and within the vast boundaries of the great Roman Empire, and one of them was the fall of Jerusalem to Titus in 70 A.D.  But Jesus indicated the end of the age was a long way off by his comment “but the end is not by and by.”

The following verses began to be fulfilled in 1948 when Israel became a nation.

Luke 21:10,11 – Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: [11] And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

In Parts 1 through 6, an exposition was given that covered Mark 13:1-8, Matthew 24:1-8, and Luke 21:5 to 19.  Part 6 completed Luke 21:12-19 as an answer to the first of three questions the disciples asked Jesus, which are found in Matthew 24:3, the first question being, “when shall these things be?”  They wanted to know what signs would be occurring from that time until the temple was leveled.

Matthew 24:3 – And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Part 6 ended with the exposition of Luke 21:19, so Part 7 will continue to answer this first question, beginning with Luke 21:20.

Luke 21:20 – And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

There were actually two surroundings of Jerusalem by Roman troops in the Jewish War.  The first occurred in response to Menahem’s breaking open of Herod’s armory on Masada, after which he quickly distributed its weaponry to his fellow Jerusalem citizens and the wilderness bandits of Masada.  The events that transpired after that are fully described in the account of the JEWISH WARS by Josephus, the great historian of the time.  All of this culminated in the slaughter of the Jewish colony in Caesarea, capital city of the Governor, with more than 20,000 suffering death in the brutal slaughter.  This event marked the true beginning of the Jewish War.  The Jews, in response to this carnage, began their war against Rome.  The Roman general Cestius Gallas was commissioned by Rome to put down the Jewish rebellion.  He enjoyed great success in city after city, until he came to Jerusalem.  After having put down the rebellion in areas north and west of Jerusalem, he came to set up his camp in a place called Gibeon, six miles from Jerusalem.  Eventually, after several skirmishes, Cestius surrounded Jerusalem, and set his camp headquarters on Mt. Scopus.  His troops kept the city surrounded for some time, thinking the Jews would surrender.  Then, and even today, military strategists are amazed he did not attack the city, rather than surrounding it for some time.  They say he could have almost walked into the city and the Jews would have capitulated.  But suddenly he withdrew from around the city and headed north.  When the Jews saw this, they took courage, and viciously attacked the rear flanks of his retreating army.  The Jewish losses were negligible, but the Romans and their allies lost 5,300 infantrymen and 480 cavalrymen to death.  The surrounding of the city, and the battle, occurred in 66 A.D., and incurred the wrath of the Emperor of Rome.  Nero dispatched the Roman general Vespasian to Israel to put down the Jewish rebellion.  Vespasian’s march across Syria and northern Israel is not pertinent to this exposition, so I will not list its events.  He eventually smashed Jericho and all the smaller cities around Jerusalem, and would have gone against Jerusalem, but was recalled to Rome and declared Emperor in 69 A.D., leaving his son Titus in change of the Roman legions in Israel.  Titus surrounded Jerusalem, and began his siege against it in March of 70 A.D., capturing the Fortress Antonia in July, firing Herod’s Temple in August, and desolating the entire city in September.  The desolations of the Jewish War ended with Mesada’s fall to the Romans in 73 A.D., which had been in Jewish hands since being conquered in 66 A.D. by insurgents.  So, when Jerusalem fell in 70 A.D., Vaspasian was the Emperor of Rome and his son Titus, as a Prince of Rome, came in like a flood and desolated the city, and until the end of the war desolations continued across southern Israel.

Luke 21:21 – Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

After the first surrounding of Jerusalem by Cestius, Josephus indicates that “many of the most imminent of the Jews swam away from the city, as from a ship when it was going to sink.”  It is quite likely that many believers left the city when he withdrew, and never returned, taking it as a fulfillment of the warning in Luke 21:20.  When Titus came some four years later to surround it for the second time, some have written that very few believers were to be found in the city, since they believed the first surrounding was the sign of warning the city would soon be made desolate.  However, since the siege began at the time of Passover, few believers would have been in the city.  But there is no question that after Jerusalem was surrounded by Titus, it was made desolate some seven months later, and I am convinced this is the desolation that Jesus spoke of in Luke 21:20.  In modern day terminology they were advised “to get out o’ town and head fo de hills, and don’t u’ cum bak no moe, no moe.”

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102:11-22 – Part 4

PSALM 102:13 – Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

We covered verse 13 in Part 3, showing a future set time when, after a period of great tribulation, the Messiah of Israel would return and show her great favor, arising as the Sun of righteousness, with merciful spiritual healing in his wings, under which the people of Israel would grow up as favored calves of his stall.

Malachi 4:1-3 – For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. [2] But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. [3] And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.

PSALM 102:14 – For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.

In this millennial period of “growing up as calves of the stall,” God’s people will love the stones that are used in the great rebuilding of the millennial temple and the restored city of Jerusalem. It will make the temple of Solomon as a dim light by comparison, and the Lord of Israel will have it as his dwelling place. They will love the very dust of the ground upon which they stand in the land grant promised by God to Abraham through Isaac and Jacob. Their territory will extend northward to Hamath in Syria, west to the Mediterranean, south to Kadesh, and east to the Euphrates.

Genesis 15:18 – In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Ezekiel 47:17 – And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And this is the north side.

Ezekiel 47:19 – And the south side southward, from Tamar even to the waters of strife in Kadesh, the river to the great sea. And this is the south side southward.

The city limits of Jerusalem will stretch into Jordan, and his sanctuary will be in the midst of the complex.

Ezekiel 40:2 – In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

Ezekiel 48:35 – It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.

Ezekiel 37:28 – And the heathen shall know that I the Lord do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

Israel will rebuild the great Jerusalem complex and temple according to God’s instructions found in Ezekiel 40 to 48. When the temple is completed the Messiah will enter it in the radiance of the Shechinah Glory of God.

Ezekiel 43:4-7 – And the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. [5] So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. [6] And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me. [7] And he said unto me, Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places.

He will finally rule over the city that at first received him and then rejected him.

Micah 5:2 – But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Luke 19:35-41 – And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. [36] And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. [37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; [38] Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. [39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. [40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. [41] And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

On his Second Advent he will return as King with his brethren, and they will receive him.

Micah 5:3 – Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.

On his First Advent he gave them up, and Israel will go through a time of great travail until he is brought forth at his Second Advent accompanied by his brethren.

Matthew 23:37-39 – O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! [38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. [39] For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

He will gather all his brethren in heaven from one end of it to the other, and they will return with him.

Matthew 24:31 – And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Jude 1:14 – And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Luke 21:27 – And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Revelation 1:7 – Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102:11-22 – Part 5

Psalm 102:15 – So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

There is an ever decreasing fear of the name of the Lord among the nations of the world because many believe he does not exist. Over the past 50 years this lack of fear in his name has been growing among all of mankind. Psalm 2 indicated this would be the case in the last days.

Psalm 2:1-3 – Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, [3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

The heathen today have no fear of God, and indeed do set themselves against him and his anointed Son, with a fervent desire to remove all traces of him in any form of governmental structure or action. But God sits today in heaven laughing at their attempt, knowing it would come in the last days, and he will change their attitude by the great tribulation he is about to bring on them, such that the heathen will fear him during the reign of his returned Son.

Psalm 2:4,5 – He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. [5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

Psalm 102:15 – So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

They will see the glory of God revealed in his Son as he returns to rule and reign for a thousand years, and they will repeat it to their descendents for a thousand years.

Luke 21:25-27 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; [26] Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. [27] And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

God’s Son will sit in Jerusalem and rule throughout the millennium.

Psalm 2:6-12 – Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. [10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [11] Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

The Lion of Judah will establish Israel in the midst of the Gentile nations as a lion among the weaker beasts in a forest, and any that would dare to stand against her will be crushed to powder. All of Israel’s enemies will be cut off.

Micah 5:8,9 – And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver. [9] Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

Israel will be established as the highest of all mountains above a world of mountains, symbolized as nations by the prophet Isaiah, and Israel will walk in the light of the Lord.

Isaiah 2:1-5 – The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. [2] And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. [3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. [4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. [5] O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.

Psalm 102:15 – So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

Ezekiel 39:21,22 – And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. [22] So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 8 (First Page Same as Part 1)

In Parts 1 through 7, an exposition was given that covered Mark 13:1-8, Matthew 24:1-8, and Luke 21:5-19. Part 7 completed Luke 21:12-21 as an answer to the first of three questions the disciples asked Jesus, which are found in Matthew 24:3, the first question being, “when shall these things be?” They wanted to know what signs would be occurring from that time until the temple was leveled.

Matthew 24:3 – And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Part 7 ended with Jerusalem compassed about and placed under siege by the armies of Titus, son of the Emperor Vespasian, and a Prince of Rome.

Since I have already fully exposited on Luke 21:21, we will begin Part 8 with an exposition of 21:22.

Luke 21:22 – For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

Luke is not referring to all things concerning all written prophecy up to the final heaven age. He is referring to all the things the prophets wrote concerning the context of what he had just written in Luke 21:12-22, which consisted of the events leading up to, and the actual desolation of, the old city of Jerusalem itself. Israel and Jerusalem would not listen to what the prophets said or wrote. The Olivet Discourse in Matthew 23:30-32 states that were indeed the children of their Fathers who killed the prophets, and in 23:36-38 boldly says the punishment of Israel and the city of Jerusalem would come on that present generation. And in the latter years of that generation it came precisely as Jesus had stated.

Matthew 23:30-32 – And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. [31] Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. [32] Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

Matthew 23:36-38 – Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. [37] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! [38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

These were indeed the days of vengeance from 66 A.D. to 73 A.D.! What went on during the siege of Jerusalem is well documented by the great Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, but Jesus stated it very plainly in two different sections of Luke.

Luke 21:23 – But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

Luke 23:27-30 – And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. [28] But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. [29] For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. [30] Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

The information following was taken from the writings of Josephus, and describes the distress brought upon them, especially upon the elderly, and those women carrying or raising small children.

“Thus it was that wives robbed their husbands, children their fathers, and – most horrible of all – mother’s their babies, snatching the food out of their very mouths; and when their dearest ones were dying in their arms, they did not hesitate to deprive them of the morsels that might have kept them alive.” “They showed not pity for gray hairs or helpless babyhood, but picked up the children as they clung to their precious bits and dashed them upon the floor.” “If they had flesh on their bones they were deemed to have plenty of stores; if they were already reduced to skeletons they were passed over, since they were certain to die of famine in a short while.” “With dry eyes and grinning mouths those who were slow to die watched those whose end came sooner.” Starvation and acts of cannibalism went hand in hand within the city.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102:11-22 – Part 6

Psalm 102:16 – When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

There is coming a time, following a time of great horror known as the period of great tribulation, when the Lord will return and build up Jerusalem and all of Israel. He will first appear in his glory at his Second Advent, and immediately thereafter the rebuilding of Zion will be initiated.  He will also appear again in his glory when the building of the millennial temple is finished.

Luke 21:25-28 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; [26] Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. [27] And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Ezekiel 43:1-5 – Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: [2] And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. [3] And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face. [4] And the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. [5] So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house.

Jesus gave a preview of future coming attractions of his Second Advent during his First Advent.  He let three of his disciples have a preview of how he would appear at the Second Advent during his First Advent in Matthew 16:27 to 17:3, to which John referred to in his Gospel.

Matthew 16:27 to 17:2 – For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. [28] Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. [1] And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, [2] And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. [3] And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

John 1:14 – And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Psalm 102:16 – When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

Zechariah 6:12,13 – And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord: [13] Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Christ will fill both of the high offices of Israel – High Priest and King.

Amos 9:11-15 – In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: [12] That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this. [13] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. [14] And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. [15] And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God.

Isaiah 65:21-23 – And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. [22] They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. [23] They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them.

Isaiah 61:4-6 – And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. [5] And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. [6] But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

Isaiah 66:10-14 – Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her: [11] That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory. [12] For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees. [13] As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. [14] And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

Israel’s 2000 years of shame will be behind her, and she will receive the double blessing of the Lord for it.

Isaiah 61:7-9 – For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them. [8] For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. [9] And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102 – Part 7

Psalm 102:17 – He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

The Hebrew word translated “destitute” means “the poor,” inferring they are destitute in something, which causes them to be classified as poor.  It comes from the primary root “arar,” which means to break, to lift up, to make bare.  In this particular context it refers to men and women who have been broken to humility before God, who have broken hearts and contrite spirits, as those who see themselves poor in spirit before God, and therefore needing to be lifted up.   The types of people that would fit into this characteristic are found in the following Psalms.

Psalm 34:18 – The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 51:17 – The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

And this is also the characteristic of the persons found in the first beatitude Christ gave to his disciples.

Matthew 5:1-3 – And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: [2] And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, [3] Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

There is the characteristic of a helpless child who has to depend on a provider to be kept physically alive.  In the case in point in refers to one who trusts in Christ alone to provide it with eternal spiritual life.

Luke 18:17 – Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

Psalm 102:17 – He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

The prayer of the Publican was that of one destitute of the ability to justify himself, while the prayer of the Pharisee was that of one rich in own ability to justify himself.

Luke 18:9-14 – And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: [10] Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. [11] The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. [12] I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

The Lord regarded the prayer of the destitute Publican, but despised the prayer of the Pharisee who exalted himself.  The Pharisees considered themselves to be rich in spirit, and would not humble themselves to come to a carpenter from the dirty little town of Nazareth.  They would not accept the scriptures that taught of Messiah, but developed their own traditions of what he would be like, and what he would do.  So they did not come to him for the salvation of their souls.  They simply would not honor him as the Son of God.

John 5:39-41 – Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. [40] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. [41] I receive not honour from men.

They did not possess the kingdom of heaven because they were not poor in spirit toward God, thinking their own righteousness of spirit was rich enough to justify then before God.

Matthew 5:3 – Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

It has always been the same, the self righteous do not see themselves as poor in spirit, but the unrighteous see they must be imputed his righteousness by grace to be rich toward God through Jesus.  There is no salvation of the soul other than by calling on the name of Jesus to save you.

Acts 4:12 – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Romans 10:13 – For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:17 – So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:9-11 – That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. [11] For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Psalm 102:17 – He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

Matthew 5:3 – Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 9 (First Page Same as Part 1)

Luke 21:24 – And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Part 8 ended with the city of Jerusalem under siege in a horrible state of butchery, pestilence, and starvation, and on the verge of being overrun by the army of the Roman Prince Titus. The siege had lasted some seven months. It began in March of 70 A.D., the first two walls were captured in May, the Fortress Antonia in July, the temple was fired in August, and the city was desolated in September. The generation of the cross did not pass before it happened, exactly as Jesus had stated earlier in the Olive Discourse, in Matthew 23:36-38. The temple Jesus rendered spiritually desolate on the cross, was made physically desolate by Titus in 70 A.D.

Josephus describes the final onslaught of the Romans, when they came into the city like a flood, as a great wave of sheer horror: “They poured into the streets sword in hand, cut down without mercy all within reach, and burnt the houses of any who took refuge indoors, occupants and all. Many they raided, and as they entered in search of plunder they found whole families dead and rooms full of the victims of starvation. Horrified by the sight, they immerged empty handed. They ran every man through whom they met and blocked the narrow streets with corpses, deluging the whole city with gore, with some of the fires being quenched by the blood of the slain. At dusk the slaughter ceased as the fire gained the mastery, and when the sun rose over Jerusalem it was all in flames.” And it was all because they did not know Christ’s time of visitation as their Messiah.

Luke 19:41-44 – And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, [42] Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. [43] For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, [44] And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

During the siege, 1,100,000 Jews perished by the sword, pestilence, and famine. Some 97,000 were taken captive, most of which were sold off as slaves across the world of the Roman Empire. Jerusalem was trodden down under the control of many different Gentile (non-Jewish) nations continuously until June of 1967. In 1967 the Israeli army took it back from the Jordanians, and for the first time in almost 1900 years it was militarily in the hands of Israel. It will remain under control of the Israeli military until the Gentiles retake it to begin the fulfillment of Revelation 11:2, after which it will once again be under the control of Gentiles for 42 months (1260 days), but “the fullness” of the Gentile Age of Romans 11:25 will then come in to close out the 42nd month.

Revelation 11:2 – But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Romans 11:25 – I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

The “times of the Gentiles” for Old Jerusalem, and its Temple Mount, were fulfilled in June of 1967. But the “fullness of the Gentiles” is still to come in, and refers to the absolute end of the Gentile Age, at which time all of Israel is grafted back into God’s Olive tree for Christ’s reign.

I believe the following events represent the pattern that began in 1967, which will end at the end of the tribulation period.

1. Jerusalem and its Temple Mount were captured in June of 1967.

2. Jerusalem and its Temple Mount will fall to the Gentiles. I believe this is likely to happen between 2008 and 2012.

3. Forty-two months after it falls to the Gentiles, the Israelis will take it back as the fullness of the Gentile Age comes in to end the period of tribulation, and Israel is restored to power.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102 – Part 8

PSALM 102:17,18 – He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. [18] This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord.

As we established in Part 7, God has always regarded the prayer of those who recognized themselves as being spiritually desolate before him, and has not despised the prayer of such, answering their requests favorably. It has been the practice of God to favorably answer the prayer of all who would call upon his name believing the promise he made in the seed of Genesis 3:15.

Genesis 3:15 – And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and HER SEED; IT shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise HIS heel.

The promised seed to come was to have a body with a heel, and that heel was to suffer great affliction as he stepped on the serpent’s head to crush the power it had gained over fallen man.

Adam and Eve naturally thought that their first seed was to be the one who would crush the power of the serpent over them, and were anxious to see how Cain would do it, but they were sadly disappointed when God rejected Cain as the seed, not accepting his offering.

Genesis 4:1,5 – And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. [5] But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And after Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve were acutely aware that neither Cain nor Abel could be the seed God would use to deliver them from the power of the Devil. So Eve waited for another seed to come, and that seed was Seth.

Genesis 4:25 – And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me ANOTHER SEED instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

At this point Seth was thought to be the promised seed who would deliver them from the power of Satan, but something then happen to cause them to realize, for the first time, the birth of the promised seed might be in the distant future – Seth had a son – and what would they naturally have done, not knowing which one of them was the promised seed, or if was to be a future seed? You guessed it – they would begin to call upon the name of the Lord until God sent him and revealed him as such.

Genesis 4:26 – And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

So men and woman have been calling on the name of the Lord regarding the redemptive work of the seed he promised since Adam and will be doing so until the final heavenly kingdom is revealed. The promised seed has always been the Son of man and the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

The promise of Genesis 3:15 was written to generations in the past, the present generation, and generations of the future, which God would CREATE IN THE SEED to do good works by his power and in his name.

Ephesians 2:8-10 – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

PSALM 102:18 –This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord.

Ephesians 1:6,7,12-14 – To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. [7] In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Ephesians 1:12-14 – That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. [13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, [14] Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 4:30 – And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Matthew 28:20 – Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Ephesians 3:10 – To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

I Peter 2:5 – Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Psalm 51:17 – The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102 – Part 9

PSALM 102:19 – For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth;

The Psalmist in 14:2,3 tells us what he saw when he cast his view down on earth, as does Paul in Roman 3:10,23 and Isaiah in 53:6.

Psalm 14:2,3 – The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. [3] They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Romans 3:10 – As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Isaiah 53:6 – All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

God look down and saw mankind imprisoned by Satan in the bondage of sin, under God’s condemnation with a death sentence imposed on them for their inherited sin condition. He has compassion on those who groaned under the weight of their sin and spiritual separation from him because of it.

PSALM 102:19,20 – For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth; [20] To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

Hebrews 9:27 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Job was concerned because God seemed so distant and far away, as one who looked down from heaven and passed judgment on individual men, but the individual had no way of communicating with him as a human. He cried out to God for a daysman, a referee, an umpire who could lay his hand on both God and man, to help man to understand the judgment that was being passed on him.

Job 9:32,33 – For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. [33] Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

Jesus came as the daysman between God and man, the messenger from God who was both the Son of God and the Son of man. Jesus came as the interpreter between God and man, and to show his Father’s righteousness in the sinless life he lived in the flesh. Jesus overcame the world and his body was not corrupted by worms in the grave. He showed man God’s righteousness with a promise he would be gracious and imput it to those who asked them to save him from the pit of hell, paying the ransom that delivered them with his own blood and body. Jesus came as the light of life, so that man might receive his light, and be delivered from hell.

Job 33:22-28 – Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. [23] If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: [24] Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. [25] His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth: [26] He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness. [27] He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; [28] He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

Job speaks of the time when he knows he will see God in his new glorified body, and asks that be recorder for all the ages to read.

Job 19:23-27 – Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! [24] That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! [25] For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: [26] And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: [27] Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

PSALM 102:20 – To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

Isaiah 42:5-7 – Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: [6] I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; [7] To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Isaiah 61:1 – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

PSALM 102:20 – To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

Matthew 4:16,17 – The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. [17] From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John 3:19 – And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 5:24 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Hebrews 9:27,28 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: [28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 10 (First Page Same as Part 1)

In Parts 2 and 3 it was established that Luke 21:10,11 is the answer Jesus gave his disciples to their second question in Matthew 24:3, the question being “and what shall be the sign of thy coming?”

Matthew 24:3 – And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Matthew also provides the answer in Matthew 24:7,8, and calls the events in it “the beginning of sorrows,” but Luke does not? Why?

Matthew 24:7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Luke 21:10,11 – Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: [11] And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke does not call it “the beginning of sorrows” because he adds “fearful sights and great signs,” and they are not to occur in this time period, but rather in the time of the answer to the third question. And the third question was what shall be the sign “of the end of the world (age)?” You can see this by linking these two signs from Luke 21:11 with 21:25.

Luke 21:11 – And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

In Luke 21:8,9 and 12-24 Christ answers the first question, “when shall these things be,” or what signs will occur before the temple’s leveling? In the last part of verse 24 he tells the disciples what will happen to the Jews after the temple is leveled until the times of the Gentiles for Jerusalem are fulfilled. This period was from 70 A.D. to 1967. We are now waiting for the “fullness” of the Gentiles to come in (Romans 11:25) at the 2nd Advent of Christ. Luke 21:12-24 has already been fulfilled. We are now waiting for Luke 21:25-27 to be fulfilled.

Luke 21:8,9 – And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. [9] But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Luke 21:12-24 – But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. [13] And it shall turn to you for a testimony. [14] Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: [15] For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. [16] And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. [17] And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake. [18] But there shall not an hair of your head perish. [19] In your patience possess ye your souls. [20] And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. [21] Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. [22] For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. [23] But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. [24] And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

In Luke 21:10,11 Christ answers the second question, “and what shall be the sign of thy coming?”

Luke 21:10,11 – Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: [11] And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

In Luke 21:25-27 Christ answers the third question, and what shall be the sign “of the end of the world (age)?”

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102 – Part 10

Psalm 102:19-22 – For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth; [20] To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; [21] To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; [22] When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

God has been looking down from heaven for a very long time across the surface of the earth.  He heard the deep groans of men and women who were prisoners of the Devil, in bondage to sin, and for those who cried out for deliverance he provided the sacrifice of his Son as the redemption price for their deliverance from his eternal condemnation, loosing them from an eternity in the lake of fire.  There is coming a day when all whom he loosed will return with him at his Second Advent, having been judged for rewards in heaven.  The kingdoms of this world will become his kingdoms, and the name of Lord Jesus will be declared as King of kings, and Lord of lords.  His praises will ring out across the earth from Jerusalem, the Zion of God.  All the peoples and kings of the earth will serve him.

Revelation 11:15 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Isaiah 61:3-9 – To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.  [4] And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. [7] For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

Ezekiel 39:27-29 – When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations; [28] Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. [29] Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

Ezekiel 37:21,22 – And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: [22] And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:

Zechariah 14:16-21 – And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. [17] And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. [18] And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. [19] This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.   [20] In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the Lord’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar. [21] Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts.

Genesis 9:24-27 – And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. [25] And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

AN EXPOSITION OF PSALM 102:11-22

PSALM 102:11 -– My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.

I Peter 1:24,25 – For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: [25] But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

James 1:16,17 – Do not err, my beloved brethren. [17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

I Peter 1:23 – Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Matthew 24:35 – Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

James 1:18 – Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Genesis 4:25,26 – And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. [26] And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

Hebrews 13:5 – Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Romans 8:38,39 – Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. [38] For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

PSALM 102:13 – Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

Isaiah 60:10-12 – And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. [11] Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. [12] For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

Revelation 3:11-13 – Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. [12] Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. [13] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Ezekiel 39:21,22 – And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. [22] So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.

PSALM 102:16 – When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

THE GLORY OF HIS SECOND COMING!

Psalm 102:16 – When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

THE GLORY OF HIS SECOND COMING SHOWN DURING HIS FIRST COMING!

Matthew 16:27 to 17:3 – For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

PSALM 102:18 –This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord.

John 3:6,7 – That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

PSALM 102:20 – To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

Isaiah 61:1 – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Matthew 4:16,17 – The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. [17] From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

[7] For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 11   (First Pages Came from Parts 1&2)

In Part 2, an exposition of Matthew 24:1-6, Mark 13:7, and Luke 21:9 was given.  The exposition revealed that the disciples asked Jesus three specific questions involving events associated with the establishment of his kingdom on the earth.  They were: (1) When will Herod’s temple be leveled?, (2) What things can we look for to let us know your kingdom is soon going to be established?, and (3) What things can we look for to let us know the present age of Gentile domination is drawing to a close?  He began by first addressing the signs that would precede the leveling of the temple of Herod.  He stated in Matthew 24:5,6, Mark 13:6,7, and Luke 21:8,9 that two things could be expected to draw their attention before the destruction of Herod’s temple: (1) Many would come claiming to be the promised Messiah, and (2) There would be many wars throughout the Roman empire, both internal, and around the vast expanse of its long borders.  History confirms that is precisely what happened during the time frame before the destruction of the temple.  Jesus was very clear in his instructions for them to NOT use these two things as the signs that would precede the other two questions they had asked, as he stated: “but the end (of the age) is not yet, but the end (of the age) shall not be yet, but the end (of the age) is not by and by.”  So, having given them a partial answer to question one, which he will answer more completely later in the discourse, he launches into his answer to question two.  How can I be sure he starts a new discourse in the next verse?

Luke 21:9,10 – But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. [10] THEN SAID HE unto them, Nation shall RISE AGAINST nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

The English words “THEN SAID HE” are “TOTE ELEGEN.”  TOTE ELEGEN points to a new beginning in discourse, which has the effect of dissociating the repeated mention of the previous disturbances (From the Expositor’s Greek Testament, Volume 1, Edited by W. Robertson Nicoll, M.A., LL.D.)  Simply stated, it amounted to Jesus saying, now that I have told you what would precede the temple destruction, I will answer your second question, the question “And what shall be the sign of thy coming,” or “What things can we look for to let us know you are soon to establish your kingdom?”

Luke 21:11 – And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

The Greek word translated “divers places” is made up of two words: “kata,” which means “down,” being used here in the distributive sense, “throughout, from one place to another,” and the word “topos, which means “places” in the earth’s topography.  The inference is that earthquakes would be occurring down through the earth in many different places. The fearful sights and signs were to begin to appear more frequently in the atmosphere of the earth as smoke clouds, rising from volcanic eruptions, when the tribulation period drew closer.

Please consider what I wrote five years ago in Archive Prophecy Update 18, concerning the reasons for the increase in earthquakes, and the importance of the word translated “divers.”

BEGIN EXTRACT FROM UPDATE 18

In 1967 Israel recaptured the Old City of Jerusalem and her Temple Mount and, for the first time since she lost it to the Romans in A.D. 70, she regained sovereignty over it. During the 19 year period that followed, from 1968 to 1986, there were 125,011 earthquakes reported across the earth. In just 14 years, from 1986 to 2000, we had 247,347 earthquakes reported on this globe. I assure you that they will continue to accelerate, but if they were simply to continue at this static rate of 17,688 per year then, by the time that the 19 year cycle is completed in 2005, there will have been 335,687 reported across the earth. The average number reported per year since 1948 has increased, in 19 year cycles, from 1,726 to 6,579 to 17,688. I realize that a large part of the increase is due to better seismological equipment, a better reporting system, and an increase in the density of population, but it cannot be attributed to these factors alone. And, after all, Jesus simply said, for all practical purposes, that more and more would be reported in many different (divers) places just before he came again. And, in saying they would be in many different places, one would have to surmise he knew man would spread across the earth and that technology would rapidly increase in the last days. In any case, it demonstrates he is who he claimed to be, the Son of God, who knows the future. Did not the Spirit, in Daniel 12:4, indicate that man would spread across the earth, and technology would bring a literal knowledge and capability explosion: “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Could Jesus have known less?

END EXTRACT FROM UPDATE 18

In Archive Prophecy Update Number 206, you can see that when the last 19 year cycle was completed, the actual number of reported earthquakes had increased from the estimate of 17,668 to 20,061.

Also, please consider the following extract regarding the importance of Jesus saying that more earthquakes were going to be reported just before his coming, without giving the specific reason as to why.

BEGIN EXTRACT FROM UPDATE 162B

Man has indeed run to and fro in the earth, under the earth, and above the earth, and experienced an unbelievable knowledge explosion in the last 100 years.  We now know what produces earthquakes, and all the other things associated with the earth’s functioning parts.  Jesus walked on this earth as its creator.  He knew everything there was to know about it.  He knew its past and its future.  He knew that man would eventually discover the rest of the world, and then spread across it.  He knew the world’s population would pass six billion in 1999.  He knew that man’s immorality in sexual conduct would cause 40 million cases of HIV to exist on the earth in 2003.  He knew seismic tomography would be able to photograph the earth to its core before the dawn of the twenty-first century.  He knew that a very efficient worldwide seismological system of reporting earthquakes would come into being, and that earthquakes would be reported in places they had never been reported before, because of the new system and man spreading into many areas that had never felt a human foot.  He knew that many more earthquakes would be reported than ever before, and that this would continue right up to the time of his coming.  He also indicated that just before his coming the whole tectonic structure was set for a massive readjustment, which geologists have labeled as a period of “isostasy” that occurs between long intervals of time.  I believe it is what the Bible identifies as the tribulation period. So, with all this in mind, let’s take a look at what Jesus said about the pattern earthquakes would follow in the beginning of sorrows, which was to eventually lead into the tribulation period.

Matthew 24:7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in DIVERS places. [8] All these are the beginning of SORROWS.

There are two key words in this verse we must take into account concerning earthquakes.

(1)    DIVERS, meaning many different places,

(2)   And SORROWS, meaning the pains of a woman giving    birth.

The Lord indicated that earthquakes would be on the increase like a woman’s birth pains.  He did not say WHY they would increase in number.  He just said they would be increasing in number.  He was the only man on earth at the time that knew WHY!  Now, because of our knowledge explosion, we know WHY, or at least PART of WHY!  There is no way an atheistic scientist can prove they aren’t, and there is no way a Christian scientist can prove they are – Why?  Because the atheistic will normally tell you the increase in earthquakes is due totally to all the reasons I listed previously, and a Christian will normally tell you the increase is not totally due to all the reasons I gave earlier.  Quite frankly, I am convinced that, while most of the unbelievable increase is due to those reasons listed, some of it is due to the hand of the Lord in his creation.  But the question of WHY is mute because the increase in the number reported is fantastic, and Jesus did not say WHY, he just said it would happen, and IT IS!

Matthew 24;7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences (loimos), and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows (odin).

In Part 11 we gave a lengthy discussion of why earthquakes, famine, and pestilence were, just before Jesus returns, according to the word “odin,” supposed to follow the pattern of birth pangs a woman suffers in child bearing. We demonstrated that, for the first time in history, when Israel became a nation, worldwide earthquakes were following such a pattern. But what about “pestilence?” Is it following the pattern of a woman’s birth travail for the first time since Jesus prophesied it would do so? Absolutely! The basic root meaning of the word “loimos,” translated “pestilence,” is simply “any deadly infectious disorder.” Many plagues have passed through mankind since the fall, but none have generated a massive epidemic that was continuously accelerating over a long period of time. These “loimos” have never been able to follow the pattern of a woman’s birth pains for very long on a worldwide basis. Cholera, small pox, typhoid, bubonic plague, and so on, have appeared in short spurts like false labor, but none has ever maintained a persistent, ever increasing, epidemic characteristic with seemingly no end. But now, for the first time, we have a “loimos,” a deadly infectious disorder, that has portrayed these characteristics from its inception. The HIV virus is the first to perfectly match the pattern of a woman’s birth pangs, and it will continue to do so until the travail of the woman Israel ends, and the Son she rejected arrives. HIV is a virus that has swept across the globe like wildfire. HIV cases worldwide increased from a trace in 1980 to more than 5 million in 1985, to more than 10 million in 1990, to more than 20 million in 1995, to a whopping 35 million in 2000, and to more than 40 million in 2005.  AIDS, the dreadful blossom of HIV, was first reported in a British sailor, who died in England in 1959. HIV has hardest hit Africa up to this point, but it is poised to spread into Asia and the former Soviet Union as an ever-increasing storm. And, in truth, medical researchers seem no closer to fining a cure than they were twenty five years ago.

Are there other “loimos” infections that have also started to demonstrate the patterns of a woman’s birth pangs? Yes! The World Health Organization (WHO) fears that tuberculosis may kill 30 million worldwide during the next decade. The emergence of drug-resistant strains, and the spread of HIV have both hampered efforts by health agencies to slow the renewed spread of the consumptive illness. Another sort of “loimos” is malaria, which is on the rise around the world, and once curative treatments are losing their effect. It is a pestilence of global dimensions, and new strains are evolving that scientists fear will be untreatable.

But what about all the microbes generating all this pestilence, this “loimos,” these deadly infectious disorders, what are they doing, how are they behaving? Are they doing something that will make the pestilences continue to act like a woman’s birth pangs through the tribulation period? Yes! A leading national magazine cover, back in the last century, carried the bold print title: “REVENGE OF THE KILLER MICROBES – ARE WE STILL LOSING THE WAR AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES?” Tuft’s Levy answered the question in Newsweek Magazine by stating: “The rise of drug-resistant germs is unparalleled in recorded biologic history.” Because of this contributing factor, pestilence will become more and more widespread in its acceleration until the second advent of Christ.

But Before All These – As Ye See the Day Approaching – Part 13 (First Pages Came from Parts 1&2)

We demonstrated that, for the first time in history, after Israel became a nation, the worldwide earthquakes were following such a pattern – But what about “pestilence?” Is it following the pattern of a woman’s birth travail for the first time since Jesus prophesied it would do so? Absolutely! The basic root meaning of the word “loimos,” translated “pestilence,” means: “any deadly infection.”

Matthew 24:7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows.

In previous prophecy updates we have discussed the importance of the word “odin”, which is the Greek word translated “sorrows” in Matthew 24:8. It refers to the birth pangs experienced by a woman in childbirth. So in using this word Jesus indicates they will follow this pattern just before he comes again. A woman’s birth pains begin with a single pain and then continue to increase in frequency and intensity until the child is born. These three phenomena, earthquakes, famine, and pestilence had never, in historical records, followed this pattern until Old Jerusalem and the Temple Mount were taken from the Jordanians in 1967. Since that time all three have developed such a pattern. In the two previous prophecy updates we covered earthquakes and pestilence. But what about famine, is it also following the same “odin” pattern? Absolutely! The population explosion that has suddenly burst on the scene should come as no great surprise to mankind. The world’s population has roughly, in somewhat similar manner, followed the principle of daily doubling pennies.

Suppose that someone proposed to give you five billion dollars if you would double a penny he gave you for forty days. Would you take the deal? A single penny on the first day would produce two cents on the second day, four cents on the third day, eight cents on the fourth day, sixteen cents on the fifth day, thirty-two cents on the sixth day, sixty-four cents on the seventh day, and only $1.28 on the eighth day. So, based on what you’ve read so far, it seems like a pretty good deal. But on day forty you would have to fork over more than five billion dollars. This principle is now being added into the famine equation.

The world’s famine outbreaks in the developing countries have been occurring ever closer and closer together in time since World War II, and this trend, like a woman’s birth pangs, will definitely accelerate until Jesus comes. Why? A few thousand years ago eight men and women descended in an ark “upon the mountains of Ararat,” and then began to multiply. At first, like the penny, the increase was slow and insignificant numerically. When Jesus was born, the world population had only reached about 200 million. When Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, it had only reached 400 million. But, like the multiplying multiples of the penny, it began to accelerate about the time of the Civil War, and exploded after the Great Depression of the thirties. In 1989 the world population reached five billion and, the same year, eleven million of the earth’s residents died of starvation. The world population passed six billion in October of 1999, and is predicted to reach ten billion in 2030. There is no way under heaven that the developing countries across the Bible Lands of Asia and Africa, where most of this increase is forecast to occur, can fail to have an ever increasing, massive famine. Some say the population will only reach 8.5 billion in 2030. But even if this is true, how can the additional 3.5 billion be fed if 11 million died of starvation in 1989 with a population of only five billion.

In the late seventies, when I wrote my second book, The Tribulation Triad, I pointed out that the famines absolutely had to continue to increase in frequency and intensity. It is even more of a sure thing today! One might suppose that the prediction of thirty million Africans dying from AIDS, during the next quarter century, would cause the predicted population growth to be canceled out. Nothing could be farther from the truth! In spite of this staggering AIDS toll, Africa’s population is expected to double during this time period.

Some say, don’t worry, agricultural technology will solve the famine problem. No way! The latest U.N. study found ten percent of the world’s soil profile badly damaged. The three-year study accessed soil conditions on a global scale, and involved more than 250 soil scientists. It marked the first time since World War II that soil profiles had been assessed on a global scale. As reported by Larry B. Stammer in the Los Angeles Times, the study found that “about two-thirds of all seriously eroded land is in Asia and Africa, home to most of the world’s poor.” The article, using the report as its basis, stated: “Despite the much acclaimed green revolution of the past several decades, which produced unprecedented gains in food production through the introduction of fertilizers and hybrid grains, the per-capita food production has declined in about eighty developing countries in the past decade.” The report, Vital Signs 1993: The Trends That Are Shaping Our Future, as reported by David Brisco in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of July 18, 1993, stated: “This new report shows the first clear sign that population is outpacing the food available for humans. The trend is mostly because of record world population growth, but also reflects a slowdown in decades of increasing food supplies. The main sources of food – farms, ranches, and oceans – all appear to be approaching, or may have reached, their maximum per-capita output, according to Vital Signs 1993.”

The simple truth is this, the world’s maximum food production, since the mid-nineties, has not been able to keep up with the stork’s production, and the ever increasing population will cause it to fall farther and farther behind. Earthquakes, pestilence, and famine will continue to increase the pain of God’s creation while it awaits the manifestation of his sons at the appearance of his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:22,23 – For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. [23] And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Luke 21:28 – And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
